Robert Cray
Robert Cray occupies a unique place in the blues guitar world
- a new school (that is to say, a younger) bluesman who came to
prominence in the 1980s and was able to achieve popularity far
outside the blues world. It was not only his guitar playing but
his distinct singing and songwriting style that proved that blues
doesnt have to conform to a traditional form to be valid
and cool at the same time.
Cray got his first break joining Albert Collins band in 1973, but he left two years later to form the Robert
Cray Band. After ten years of touring they began to draw acclaim in the 80s, and in 1985 Cray joined up
with Johnny Copeland and Albert Collins for the Grammy-winning album Showdown.
It was in 1986 that Cray released his breakthrough crossover hit album Strong Persuader with its songs
"Right Next Door," "Smoking Gun," "I Guess I Showed Her," and "Nothing Like
a Woman" that made him a favorite on the concert scene and won a Grammy. He has continued recording and touring,
with standout albums Dont Be Afraid of the Dark in 1988 (with the Grammy-winning title track) and
Midnight Stroll (1990) showing Crays close ties to the sound of 60s soul and R&B, and his
most recent CD is called Shoulda Been Home, released in 2001 on Rykodisc.
