Patrick Wilson Drums

With a chunky, punky, geek-rock sound, Weezer has found a niche in today's music scene with a straight-ahead distortion-mixed-with-melody approach. Their catchy pop-meets-grunge format has grown somewhat heavier yet more sharply focused over the band's 10-year history, and their popularity has persisted despite an unusual four-year absence from 1996 to 2000.

Based in Los Angeles, the members of Weezer all hail from elsewhere - Connecticut (Cuomo), Nashville (Bell), Buffalo (Wilson), and Syracuse (Welsh). The band was formed in 1992 and scored its Geffen recording contract after only 16 months together. Finding themselves in New York under the direction of producer Ric Ocasek (the Cars), Weezer recorded their first album, Weezer, known commonly as The Blue Album. Brian Bell replaced original member Jason Cropper during the recording. Released in May of 1994, it produced the hits "Buddy Holly" and "Undone - The Sweater Song" and eventually went double platinum.

The band took a hiatus while Rivers Cuomo - the band's songwriter - went to Harvard and the others worked on side projects, but got back into the studio in 1995 to record their second album, Pinkerton. While not as successful as their first album, Pinkerton went gold and had a grungier sound than the Blue Album, and featured the singles "El Scorcho" and "The Good Life." Original bassist Matt Sharp left during the second hiatus following Pinkerton, to be replaced by Mikey Welsh, formerly of Julianna Hatfield's band.

The second hiatus was a long one, but Weezer returned in 2000 on the summer Warped tour and a sold-out national club tour. With obvious fan support still with them, they reunited with producer Ocasek to create their second self-titled album, this time referred to as The Green Album. Released in 2001 it immediately yielded the monster hit "Hash Pipe," or "H*** Pipe," as it is called on MTV, plus additional singles "Island in the Sun" and "Photograph."

In August of 2001, Mikey Welsh failed to show for the video shoot of "Island in the Sun," and then was reported to have checked into a psychiatric hospital for undisclosed reasons. He has been replaced, at least temporarily, by bassist Scott Shriner.
