Best known as nine masked freaks from Iowa, Slipknot is a heavy thrash unit big on hard power-chord-riffing metal laced with multi-percussion, sampling, rap, and DJ effects with themes of hate, anger, aggression and alienation.
Emerging from Des Moines in 1995, Slipknot independently released their first recording, Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat., in 1996 and were received well enough to be signed to Roadrunner Records the following year. Their first album on that label, Slipknot, created a sensation during the Ozfest tour in 1999 and built them a core following in the metal community; they followed it with an even heavier work, Iowa, in 2001. Some of the nine have begun taking off the masks for their side projects, including Stone Sour (vocalist Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root) and the Murderdolls (drummer Joey Jordison) - but have repeatedly insisted that Slipknot is not breaking up, despite rumors to the contrary.
Root, Thomson, Jordison and Gray cite classic power metal acts as their main influences: Testament, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Exodus, early Metallica, Mercyful Fate, Venom, Testament, and Flotsam and Jetsam - describing themselves as old-school metal combined with death and black metal influences. Their songwriting team consists of drummer Jordison (a guitarist when not on stage) and bassist Gray coming up with the initial ideas, with vocalist Taylor adding the lyrics after they've taken shape. Their intense stage shows - for which they dress in grotesque masks and numbered industrial jumpsuits - and relentless touring have earned them a devoted band of followers known affectionately as "maggots."
