The four original members of Incubus (Brandon, Mike, Alex and
and Jose) formed the band back in high school in Calabasas, California,
a suburb of Los Angeles - at first playing Metallica and Megadeth
songs, but soon moving on to their own creations, writing songs
that would evolve into their own distinctive sound. They soon
found themselves busy playing party and all-age club circuits
in Southern California, and managed to play the Roxy on the Sunset
Strip.
In 1995 they independently released their first album, Fungus
Amongus, and then expanded the group to include a DJ named
DJ Lyfe. Their continued success on the local scene brought them
attention from record labels, and they were soon signed to Immortal
(Epic/Sony). An EP, Enjoy Incubus, followed in 1997, as
the band toured up and down the West Coast and in Europe in support
of the Urge and Korn. Their first full-length Immortal album,
S.C.I.E.N.C.E., came out later that year, and the band
went out on tours for 311 and Sugar Ray, drawing so much crowd
response that 311 invited them to continue touring with them.
After firing DJ Lyfe and replacing him with DJ Kilmore, Incubus
continued their relentless touring with the biggest names in new
metal and landed spots in the Warped, Ozzfest and Family Values
tours in 1998. Following a Black Sabbath tour in '99, they recorded
and released their breakthrough album, Make Yourself, and
their first hit single, "Pardon Me," which put them
on the map with MTV and national radio airplay. The band continued
its attack on the charts with "Stellar" and their huge hit "Drive,"
and released an EP of acoustic versions of the songs called When
Incubus Attacks Volume I. "Drive" was nominated for
an MTV Best Group video awards in 2001 but lost to 'N Sync.
Incubus released their next album, Morning View, to rave
reviews, scoring another major hit with "Wish You Were Here,"
plus subsequent singles "Nice to Know You" and "Circles."
After years of touring, the band has decided to take a hiatus
for some well-earned rest and recuperation.
