The Goo Goo Dolls
After honing their sound on the Buffalo bar scene for two years,
the Goo Goo Dolls signed with Metal Blade Records and subsequently
released their debut album, The Goo Goo Dolls, in 1987.
An odd pairing in retrospect, it was the Goo Goo Dolls' power
pop with strains of punkish abandon that attracted the heavy metal
label. Success did not come easily, however, as that album - and
the three that followed - received little support and did not
reach the commercial success for which the band and the label
had hoped. Then, after releasing their fifth album A Boy Named
Goo in 1995, an L.A. radio deejay placed the acoustic-themed
"Name" into heavy rotation and word soon spread. By
year's end, "Name" would be released nationwide as a
single and become one of the most-played songs on FM radio. After
10 years of grinding the rock 'n' roll circuit, the Goo Goo Dolls
finally hit big with their knack for the well-crafted, acoustic-based
hit song.
As the band prepared for its followup to A Boy Named Goo,
singer-guitarist Johnny Rzeznik incurred a horrible case of writer's
block. While struggling through this difficult period, he was
asked to contribute a song to the 1998 Nicholas Cage/Meg Ryan
romance City of Angels soundtrack. Rzeznik came through
with what would become the biggest hit of the Dolls' career: "Iris."
Another acoustic-based ballad, the song was never released as
a single yet spent a year on Billboard's airplay charts,
including an astonishing 18 weeks at #1!
Since then, the band has scored big with three more acoustic hits:
"Slide," "Black Balloon," and "Broadway."
